The local community, particularly those who are living 50 meters away from the stream has shown their commitment and efforts in taking care of the river. This led to the establishment of the Open Classroom (River Resource Centre, RCC) to promote fun learning of river conservation and solid waste management.
They have been upgrading and maintaining the RCC facility by initiating ‘gotong-royong’ activity with the local community, placing more recycle bins at 3 different RCC site and installed warning signboards.
They even established a new committee to monitor and conduct educational programmes at RCC.
Among the successful educational programmes and activities they have initiated and participated are river restoration, solid waste management, fish sampling, elimination of alien fish, river water quality monitoring and wetland and riverine planting with 30 kids and youths from the village.
The community also conducted a biodiversity inventory of their riverine and identified list of invertebrates. From the sampled invertebrates, river condition at the neighbourhood falls within the range of 5.1 – 5.7 (a rather clean to clean water quality).
As for waste management, from January to July 2015 alone, 1080KG of waste composted in-house and 120KG of waste was recycled.
